Manila court shortens bereavement leave of detained mother

MANILA, Philippines – The Manila Regional Court of First Instance has reduced the permission it granted to political detainee Queen Mae Nasino to visit the wake of her daughter, baby River, following a letter from the Manila city jail .

In its two-page order, Manila RTC has reduced Nasino’s visit from three days in a row to just two days: October 14 and 16, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day.

The Manila Court amended its October 13 order after the official in charge of the Manila city jail, Maria Ignacia Monteron, said they only have 12 staff members who could be used as an external force. External forces, he said, assist in the delivery of prisoners who are ready for release or as an escort for prisoners who need to be hospitalized.

“As of today, we have 665 PDLs in our custody, so we are exhausted with personnel,” he said in his letter.

The Manila Court, in its ruling, said: “when considering the respective arguments and positions of both parties and considering the nature of the crimes charged, the Court concludes that the Order of this Court dated October 13, 2020 that allows defendants to attend the wake and burial of his daughter needs to be modified. “
