The authorities have arrested in the city of Zamboanga four suspected members of Abu Sayyaf, two of them linked to the terrorist group with the Islamic State.
But Police General Camilo Pancratius Cascolan, head of the Philippine National Police, said the suspects cannot be prosecuted under the 2020 Anti-Terrorism Act because the rules for implementing the law have yet to be drafted. As a result, they would be charged with crimes under the Revised Penal Code.
At a news conference at Camp Crame on Monday, Cascolan said police and military teams arrested the suspects on Friday and Sunday in the city of Zamboanga. They were identified as Kadija Sadji, 31; Abdulman Sarapuddin Tula also known as “Mahn”, 32; Jailani Al-Rafee Sakandal, 31 years old; and Hassan Anang Mohammad, alias Usi.
Except for Mohammad, the rest were arrested by police on Friday in Barangay Lower Calarian, Zamboanga City.
Sadji is the daughter-in-law of Abu Sayyaf founder Abdurajak Janjalani, while Tula is in charge of logistics and provides supplies to terrorist leaders Mundi Sawadjaan and Radullan Sahiron. Sakandal, on the other hand, is an apprentice sailor in the Philippine Coast Guard.
Cascolan said Sadji and Tula acted as Islamic State financial conduits for the Abu Sayyaf faction under Sawadjaan, while Sakandal’s role in the group has yet to be determined. INQ
