The NLEX Road Warriors weren’t too happy with their season-opening performance against Barangay Geneva on Sunday night. NLEX abandoned their first assignment, 102-92, after a poor performance in the second half that dictated the outcome of the contest.
With the score tied at 55 at the 8:51 mark of the third, they gave up on a 20-4 blitz for the next four minutes to fall behind, 75-59. To make matters worse, JR Quiñahan, who had been scoring a game-high 26 points, was sent off with 1:37 left in the third period.
“We were actually still in the game when JR got sent off. He was playing really well. He was actually playing the best game for us at the time, so it was a lot less, but again, we have to be more mature. Accept that. things like that could happen. And it could have been prevented, “lamented NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao on Monday morning.
Guiao also lamented the team’s lack of coordination, especially on the defensive side.
Floor general Kiefer Ravena, playing his first All-Filipino game since 2018, only managed to score six points.
“Our first game was disappointing. The coach always talks about responsibility. For me, that’s the most important thing about this game. We started the game flat, personally, I felt like I let the team down, especially being one of the team leaders.”, Ravenna explained.
Suffocating Ravenna, said Guinevere’s mentor Tim Cone, after the victory, was an important key to claiming victory.
“I thought we did a great job defending Kiefer in the first half. And even though we played so well with him, it was a tied ball game. So I thought maybe we would be in trouble in the second half,” he recalled. Cone.
After his below-average performance, Guiao met with his team Monday morning to vent. He believes the meeting could help restore order for the rest of the eliminations.
“But overall, I still feel good about this tournament. I think we just have to pull ourselves together and get back together because I told our team, ‘It’s difficult to get into a hole in this situation. It’s very difficult to get out, especially with a compressed schedule, especially with a very small adjustment period between games, ‘”Guiao said.
“We feel like it’s part of the adjustment period. We feel like we’re better every day of practice. Our next game is Wednesday. [against Magnolia]. We will come back stronger on Wednesday and we will stay in this tournament ”, he added.
