MANILA, Philippines – Two-wheelers, such as bicycles and motorcycles, provide sufficient ventilation and help reduce the possibility of transmission of coronavirus between driver and passenger, according to a study by the University of the Philippines School of Public Health ( UP-CPH).
The UP-CPH study, which was conducted to “[empower] for people to resume their normal lives in the midst of the pandemic, ”he noted that poorly ventilated spaces could help the virus to thrive and infect passengers.
He also cited a similar study in China, saying that higher wind speeds had a greater chance of reducing cases.
The researchers behind the study recommended that both cyclists and passengers wear protective gear such as masks and helmets, and follow minimum health standards, such as regular hand hygiene, disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, and equipment washing and cleaning.
Barriers
While the use of plastic barriers to separate the passenger from the cyclist has not yet been validated by these studies, the researchers said that the use of barriers was allowed to minimize the possible transmission of the virus from person to person.
The government has come and gone between the prohibition of motorcycle taxis and the authorization of couples in the same vehicle or people who need to report to work.
The Angkas rideshare service could soon be back on the road if the government approves the use of motorcycles as public transport.
Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto on Sunday added his voice to calls among government officials to allow motorcycle taxis to resume operations.
