Federer praises Nadal’s ‘greatest achievement’
Roger Federer saw Rafael Nadal match his all-time record of 20 Grand Slam titles with a 13th win at the French Open on Sunday and hailed it as “one of the greatest achievements in sport.”
Nadal demolished Novak Djokovic 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 to add a thirteenth Roland Garros to his four US Open, two Wimbledons and an Australian Open crown.
“I have always had the utmost respect for my friend Rafa as a person and as a champion,” tweeted Federer, who was left out of the tournament to recover from knee surgery.
“As my biggest rival for many years, I think we have pushed each other to become better players.
“Therefore, it is a true honor for me to congratulate you on your 20th Grand Slam victory.
“It is especially surprising that he has won Roland Garros 13 incredible times, which is one of the greatest achievements in the sport. I hope the 20th is just one more step in the ongoing journey for both of us. “
Federer won his 20th and most recent Grand Slam title at the 2018 Australian Open and despite his 39th birthday, the Swiss star still intends to return to action in 2021.
“I think he’s happy when I win and I’m happy when he’s doing things right,” Nadal said.
“It means a lot to the positive relationship we have together because we have been going through a great rivalry for a long, long time.”
