The father of teenage tennis sensation Alex Eala said his family will reject financial aid from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), a statement he made just after the agency claimed it had already extended the help of 4.5 million dollars on his Facebook page.
The PSC post, which has since been removed, included a congratulatory message from President Butch Ramírez and mentioned cash assistance for Eala’s international competitions.
But it has been refuted by the Eala family through Alex’s mother Rizza’s own FB page, who maintained that they have not received any refund despite submitting the required documents to the PSC.
She said they have “two-inch-thick” documents, including receipts and boarding passes for Alex’s tournaments. But when they followed him, “they were turned around.”
The family has obviously had it when dealing with the PSC, which was still promising to facilitate everything on Monday, just days into Alex’s historic French Open campaign.
“They can provide that financial help to other athletes who urgently need it,” Michael Eala said by phone. “We’ve come this far without them anyway.”
The PSC had acknowledged the mistake, saying its communications office based FB’s post on a resolution passed by the board without confirming whether the controls were already released. The development qualified a moment of celebration for Philippine tennis, as 15-year-old Eala stormed the French Open women’s singles semifinals. The last time a Filipino got this far in a Grand Slam was 35 years ago through Felix Barrientos.
“There are people who call us to tell us that their families gathered for a viewing party every time Alex plays,” Michael said. “We are honored by the support Alex is receiving everywhere.” INQ
