The 7th Silk Road International Film Festival will open on October 11 in Xi’an, northwest China’s Shaanxi province, the starting point of the ancient Silk Road.
With the theme “The Silk Road unites the world, the film connects cultures”, the festival will host six major events, including film screenings, trade markets and forums.
17 specially recommended films
More than 3,500 films from 116 countries and regions, of which 90 percent are foreign films, have participated in the film recommendation section of the festival.
Seventeen films will be selected and recommended by a panel of renowned filmmakers, including Oscar-winning Iranian director Asha Fahadi, Chinese director Lu Chuan and Israeli director Amos Gitai.
500 films to screen online and offline
Approximately 500 films will be screened online and offline, one for the world premiere, three for the Asian premiere, and five for the domestic premiere.
Among the 101 films that will be shown in theaters, more than 70 percent are from 25 countries and regions along the routes of the Belt and Road Initiative, including the classic works by Italian director and screenwriter Federico Fellini and director and French screenwriter Eric Rohmer. The measure pays tribute to teachers and commemorates the centenary of their birth.
In addition, nearly 200 film screenings will be shown outdoors in Xi’an parks, universities and communities for free, and online screenings will be held through the iQIYI and Xiying.com video platforms.
Festival nurtures new filmmakers
The festival’s mission has always been to discover new filmmakers and projects. A total of 16 film projects will be selected from 418 applicants from 17 countries and regions, and will receive support from the fund for production and promotion resources.
A number of famous filmmakers have been invited to share their film experience and discuss the development paths of domestic and foreign films.
Asha Fahadi and Chinese director and actor Xu Zheng will give lectures at the Master Class, while Chinese actress Song Jia will have a remote chat with Polish director, screenwriter and producer Malgorzata Szumowska at the Panel of Women Filmmakers.
The Silk Road International Film Festival is held annually, with Xi’an and Fuzhou in Fujian province in southeast China being the city of the rotating chair. It provides an international platform for film exchange and trade and promotes cultural exchange and cooperation between China and countries and regions along the Belt and Road Initiative routes.
This year’s festival will last until October 16.
