Two-sport world champion Sam-A Gaiyanghadao is simply unstoppable at the ONE Championship Circle.
On Friday, he faced competitive but otherwise outclassed Josh “Timebomb” Tonna to retain his ONE strawweight muay thai world title at the ONE: REIGN OF DYNASTIES main event in Singapore. The Thai superstar outpointed Tonna in the second round, scoring three knockdowns to close out the contest. It was Sam-A’s lethal left hand that turned out to be the difference, with the first fall coming from that hand after he found Tonna’s jaw on the counter. A leg sweep moments later was also counted as a knockdown as the Evolve MMA standout began to take control of the match. Tonna was a game, but in the end it fell short. Another left hand sent “Timebomb” to the mat and this time he was not going to get up as the referee waved goodbye and awarded Sam-A the victory. The Thai legend improved his record to 370-47-9, an impressive figure that only keeps growing.
In the featured mixed martial arts match, Philippine-Australian flyweight Reece “Lightning” McLaren looked solid in his comeback, chipping away at Aleksi “The Giant” Toivonen’s previously immaculate record. McLaren scored an impressive KO victory over the Finn while displaying his constantly improving attacking skills. McLaren’s straight forehand was money all night, he even dropped Toivonen mid-round with one. But the end came within the clinch when the fifth-ranked flyweight dug a well-placed knee into Toivonen’s body. “The Giant” collapsed before McLaren landed a final blow just in case. McLaren improved to 14-7 and now has his sights set on the athletes above him in the flyweight rankings.
