Whether you want it boiled, sunny side up, boiled, or scrambled, an egg is always a good idea because it is cheap and offers several health benefits.
On World Egg Day, learn more about the Pinoy breakfast staple. Here are some reasons why eating eggs would be beneficial for you and your family:
1. Repair muscle tissue – Are you a gym rat or just one of those people who loves to exercise? According to the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) nutritional guidelines for Filipinos, eating eggs daily is good for growth and repair of body tissues.
2. Rich in protein – Research shows it to be one of the best sources of quality protein. However, doctors and dietitians recommend eating 2-3 eggs per week to prevent the risk of high cholesterol and increased blood lipids.
3. Eggs are perfect not only for breakfast. According to the FNRI, an egg contains essential minerals and vitamins, except vitamin C, which the body needs.
4. Good for Babies: Although eggs are known to be rich in protein, they also have vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium.
Half of the cooked egg yolk is usually given when babies reach seven months of age. But FNRI recommends giving it to babies when they are around 11 months old, due to the allergic qualities of egg white.
5. Good for baby food – Lugaw or porridge is one of the first semi-solid foods given to babies. FNRI recommends adding powdered egg yolk or dilis to the lugaw to make it more delicious.
The Health Department said World Egg Day is celebrated every second Friday in October to broaden people’s understanding of the benefits of eggs and their key role in human nutrition.
