MANILA, Philippines – Malacañang praised Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) chief Dante Gierran on Friday for his “decision” in ordering senior PhilHealth officials to present their courtesy resignations as part of the reorganization of the affected agency. for corruption, calling the measure “Take a step in the right direction.”
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque issued the statement after more than 40 senior PhilHealth officials heeded Gierra’s call to resign as part of a reorganization at the corruption-stricken state insurance agency.
“The Palace welcomes the decision of (PhilHealth) Chairman and CEO Dante Gierran to implement an old PhilHealth board resolution, which his predecessor, Mr. Ricardo Morales, blatantly failed to comply, directing to all senior officers with salary grade 26 or higher to offer their resignation as a courtesy, ”Roque said in a statement.
“We congratulate PhilHealth PCEO Gierran for their demonstration of resolve,” he added.
Roque said this development at PhilHealth is “a step in the right direction” as it is in line with President Duterte’s directive to reorganize the state health insurer and hold errant officials responsible for “giving the agency a new beginning”.
Task Force PhilHealth, which was led by the Department of Justice (DOJ), recommended corruption charges against Morales and several other PhilHealth officials.
The president created the task force to investigate PhilHealth on allegations of corruption that were uncovered during recent Congressional investigations.
Among the complaints of corruption raised are the acquisition of supposedly overvalued computer equipment; an allegedly questionable release of funds under the corporation’s Interim Refund Mechanism (IRM); and the alleged manipulation of the financial status of the corporation.
