The Mazda MX-30 is possibly the most intriguing proposition from the Japanese automaker in recent years. The little crossover is not only the brand’s first series-produced electric vehicle, it also comes equipped with suicide doors! It’s not exactly new, but you have to admit it is. pretty nice to see you in a new Mazda, right?
Anyway, let’s get back to the important non-door stuff. An electric Mazda hitting showrooms is a big deal, but not everyone is likely ready to make the leap into electric vehicle ownership. If you’re researching the MX-30’s look and overall package, but it turns out that you’re not a fan of electric vehicles, there may be an alternative. In Japan, at least.

In Mazda’s home market, the MX-30 comes with a new mild hybrid setup with a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine assisted by an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery and a regenerative braking system. It is available as all-wheel drive or 2WD, and the maximum vehicle output is indicated in 154 hp at 6,000 rpm and 199 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. However, the all-electric version of the crossover is not available in Japan.
Aside from the powertrain, you’re really not seeing much else that’s different here. The Japanese-spec Mazda MX-30 Mild Hybrid still looks the same inside and out, with a clean, minimal cabin that flaunts some very nice seats and some attractive cork material patches. And again, those suicide doors. Frankly, this is just as cute as little crossovers these days.
The base Mazda MX-30 mild hybrid in Japan carries a 2,420,000 yen (about P1.1 million) price. If you ask us, that sounds pretty good for a fancy little runabout that’s less damaging to the environment.
