MANILA, Philippines – A riot broke out inside New Bilibid Prison early Friday morning.

The riot was between the Sputnik Gang and Commando.

Bilibid spokesman Gabriel Chaclag said the commotion started at 2:30 a.m. and ended around 4 a.m.

He confirmed that there are victims and injuries, but could not give the exact figure since the incident report has not yet reached his office.

The mutiny occurred in the eastern quadrant of Bilibid.

But a report from the Southern Police District said nine victims were found after the riots: seven members of the Sputnik and two of the Commando Gang.

The Secretary of Justice, Menardo Guevarra, said that he has already ordered the Corrections Office (BuCor) to present a report on the incident as soon as possible.

“I asked DG Bantag [BuCor Director Gerald Bantag] to investigate and send me a report as soon as possible, ”Guevarra said in a text message.

BuCor, which operates seven penal institutions across the country, including Bilibid, is an agency attached to the Department of Justice.
