A 20-year-old woman in Mexico was accidentally shot dead while she and her friends filmed a fake kidnapping video for TikTok.
The victim, Areline Martínez, died instantly after being shot in the head, local media reported. It was unclear why the group used a live weapon with live ammunition for support.
Images that circulated on social media showed that moments before Martinez’s death on October 2, she was blindfolded and tied up along with another man, while several others pretended to be kidnappers standing next to them.
Martínez, the mother of a 1-year-old baby, had previously filmed similar videos that she had posted on social media, according to the Mexico News Daily on October 6. Two men involved who fled the scene have been identified by police using the video, although they have not yet been found.
All the people who participated in the filming of the video fled the area and so far no arrests have been made, according to the Mexican media. Process via The Daily Mail also on October 6.
“One of the hypotheses is that they were manipulating a firearm thinking that it was not loaded [and] They shot the woman, said the Chihuahua state attorney general, César Augusto Peniche, in Spanish.
“If someone has a criminal responsibility, they will have to answer,” he added. “There are several facts to investigate: the unfortunate death of the young woman and the origin of that weapon and how it came to her hands.”
Investigations are ongoing while a funeral was held for Martinez on Monday, Oct.5, according to the report. Ian Biong /JB
