Harris criticized Trump for his refusal to condemn white supremacy at various points in his presidency. Trump unleashed a firestorm during last week’s presidential debate when he urged the Proud Boys, a violent far-right group, to “back off and stay out” of the Black Lives Matter protests. The White House later said that the president “has always denounced” any form of white supremacy, despite evidence to the contrary.
Harris accused Trump of a “pattern” of racism, citing his ban in several Muslim-majority nations, labeling Mexicans as rapists and criminals during his campaign launch, and his statement that there were “good people on both sides” at a 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville that saw to a counter-protester killed by a white supremacist.
“This is the one we have as president of the United States,” Harris said. “America, you deserve better.”
In the meantime, Pence said he did not believe that systemic racism existed in the United States. when moderator Susan Page asked about the police murder of Breonna Taylor. Pence and Harris disagreed on whether “justice was served” in Taylor’s case.
“His family deserves justice,” Harris said. “They took his life in an unjustified, tragic and violent way.”
Pence said: “Our heart breaks for any innocent American life … But I trust our justice system, a grand jury that reviews the evidence.”
