MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday regretted the sudden implementation of cashless payments via Beep cards in public transport and said action should have been taken for poor people who may not have heard the announcement of their mandatory use. .
In a prerecorded public address, Duterte said information about its implementation did not reach all travelers, especially the poor who generally carried only the exact amount of their fare.
“So you’re saying, ‘It’s been reported.’ Who is the recipient of your news? Do you have ratings of people to whom you have relayed the news? Duterte said, speaking in part in Filipino.
“The problem is, and this is painful for me, that there are those who are short of money. They don’t carry enough, ”he added.
“If it is in the public interest that it be implemented immediately, take action for these people: those who have not listened, those who will never listen to it, and those who really have nothing in life,” he continued.
Over the weekend, many commuters lamented the sudden implementation of cashless payments on buses where fare cards or sound cards were sold for P180 each – P100 for the card itself and P80 for the initial charge.
This led the Department of Transportation to suspend the mandatory use of sound cards.
