ZAMBOANGA CITY —- The army has expressed its gratitude to the leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) for their help in the rescue of a captive farmer by members of the Abu Sayyaf Group ( ASG).
“Our sincere thanks to the leaders of the MILF and the MNLF for the assistance and support provided during the course of the operation,” said Brig. General Leonel Nicolás, commander of the 102nd Infantry Brigade of the Army.
Army and police teams located kidnapping victim Rex Triplitt and his five captors in the village of Pisa Itom in the city of Sirawai, Zamboanga del Norte province, early Wednesday (September 29).
The kidnapping victim and her captors were walking, apparently to flee from government forces.
When a shooting ensued, Triplitt was able to escape his kidnappers and was eventually rescued by soldiers.
“We rescued Triplitt without spending a penny in ransom,” Nicolás said.
Triplitt, a 64-year-old farmer from the Piacano town of the city of Sirawai, was kidnapped on September 16.
Nicolas said the Triplitt kidnappers are allied with an ASG group led by one Injam Yadah.
Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan of the Western Mindanao Command also thanked the locals for sharing advice that later formed a coherent picture of the kidnapping case.
Previously, the local government of Sirawai offered a reward of P600,000 for information on the kidnappers.
