The Department of Education (DepEd) reported on Wednesday that it already registered a total of 24.72 million enrolled in basic education in both public and private schools nationwide, three days before the planned opening of the 2020 school year (SY )- 2021 on October 5. 2020.
DepEd said enrollment figures represent 89.01 percent compared to last year’s enrollment.
For public schools, enrollment has been recorded at 22.50 million, representing 99.68 percent of the student population for the 2019-2020 school year.
In the case of private schools, there were 2.16 million enrolled, or 50.30 percent, while 394,274, or 53.28 percent, of those enrolled last year.
The DepEd, however, added that it is still anticipating that the number of students enrolled will increase as late registrants would still be accepted until November.
The Undersecretary of Planning, Human Resources and Organizational Development and Field Operations, Jesús Mateo, emphasized that late registrants will be accepted as established in Department Order 003, 2018 Series.
“[They will still be accepted until] November 21, 2020 based on the 2018 DO3 series, ”Mateo told BusinessMirror, also asking parents or guardians not to wait until November 21 to enroll their children.
Mateo cited that a school can accept late enrollment as long as the student can meet 80 percent of the prescribed number of school days for each school year and the quarterly requirement to pass the grade level as governed by the latest current emissions from the DepEd.
Previously, the Secretary of Education, Leonor Magtolis Briones, said that the enrollment figures for the SY are encouraging because, “despite the challenges posed by the economic impact of Covid-19, a clear majority of our parents have decided that the Your children’s education must continue. “
