MANILA, Philippines – A day after most of his colleagues rejected his offer to resign, President Alan Peter Cayetano thanked his fellow congressmen for their “overwhelming show of multi-party support.”

In a Facebook post Thursday, Cayetano said he went to Congress Wednesday “with a heavy heart,” knowing that he would offer his resignation and possibly end his term as Speaker of the House.

“What happened, the overwhelming show of multi-party support from my fellow House members, was, in all honesty, something I had prayed for. I thank everyone who supported me and the institution, with all my heart, ”said Cayetano.

“Regarding this issue of the Spokespersons, whatever else happens from this point on, I’m satisfied. I do not long for anything more, because nothing can overcome the warmth of your approval, “he added.

Cayetano also welcomed the pronouncements of President Rodrigo Duterte regarding the independence of Congress.

“Thank you to everyone who continues to support. It really hurts me to see the relationships that I had helped to cultivate over the past few months strained and broken due to politics, ”said Cayetano.

“In this, I welcome the multiple statements of the President in defense of the independence of Congress, respecting the votes of confidence given by its members to the current leadership and finally putting an end to this controversy,” he added.

The Speaker of the House also said that partisan interests should not take over the public welfare, as he promised to pass the proposed national budget for 2021, a budget that, he said, “will be pork-free, without stationary funds and without corruption. “

“It is true that a burden has been removed, but now there are more challenges ahead. We cannot turn our back on the crisis our nation is facing, we have to stay strong, stay the course and provide the leadership our people need, ”said Cayetano.

“We have made a vote to the president and the country that we will develop a budget that Congress can be proud of, one that puts us on a solid footing for full recovery,” he added.

“Because to whom much is given, much will be demanded; and to whom much has been entrusted, will be required …

At the end of his publication, Cayetano urged his colleagues “to make the determination to overcome this as quickly as possible, to fix what has been broken and to show the country that we are worthy of their continued high esteem.”

During Wednesday’s session, Cayetano gave a speech and ended it by offering his resignation after the shared term agreement he forged with Marinduque’s representative, Lord Allan Velasco.

However, this was immediately rejected by his colleagues, with 184 lawmakers voting to deny his offer to resign.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said Cayetano met with Duterte after his offer to resign was rejected, but said the meeting was scheduled two weeks ago by Rep. Eddie Villanueva to “pray for” the CEO.

“It so happened that the incident in the House yesterday occurred at the meeting scheduled between Brother Vice President Eddie Villanueva and the President. But the main reason for that is to pray for our president, which happened, ”Roque said in an online briefing.

(It was a coincidence that what happened yesterday in Congress coincided with the scheduled meeting of Brother Vice President Eddie Villanueva and the president. But the main reason is to pray for the president who happened).

Roque added that the “controversy is over” and that House members should now focus on approving the proposed 2021 budget on time.
