(Pocket-lint) – Facebook is testing an account center designed to bring its Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram properties closer together.
What is the Account Center and how does it work?
- Single sign-on to Facebook, Messenger and Instagram
- Cross posting of stories and posts between Facebook and Instagram
- Check with Facebook Pay on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram
The Account Center is completely optional. It is a hub that allows you to configure and access new capabilities, such as “single sign-on,” that will unify your login across all of your accounts. It will also streamline cross-posting, allowing you to share the same story or post to both Instagram and Facebook. Later this year, Facebook Pay will be coming to the Account Center in the US, so you can enter your payment information once on Facebook and then use Facebook Pay to make purchases on Instagram.
“Switching between applications to post the same content or enter your credit card information dozens of times is a hassle,” Facebook explained in a blog post. “We want to make it easier while giving you better controls to manage your experience. Whether you want to share a story on Instagram and Facebook at the same time, or use your Facebook account to log into Instagram, setting up your Account Center lets you it will allow you to control the connected experiences that work in our apps. “
Can you have a single identity with the Account Center?
- You can have separate identities on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram
- Or sync your name and photo to Facebook, Messenger and Instagram
No. Facebook said that using the Account Center doesn’t mean you have to have the same identity across all of our apps. “You can still choose to be Aisha Ahmed on Facebook, for example, and @bakersdozen on your Instagram account.” However, if you want, you can sync your name and profile picture in Facebook applications. So if you change your name or your profile photo on Facebook, it will update on Instagram / You will also have the ability to turn off automatic syncing after the fact.
When can you set up and test the Account Center yourself?
- Currently in test
- Facebook Pay integration will not be available at launch
Facebook is testing the Account Center in the Facebook, Instagram and Messenger settings. It is not yet available for everyone to try. Note that when it launches, you will not have Facebook Pay, allowing you to make Facebook Pay purchases on all Facebook properties. That will come later.
