The RECENTLY recognized professional league Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3 × 3 recently enlisted a new partner to champion local talents in the Touch Mobile (TM) brand of cellular service.
Sharing the vision of the burgeoning league for local basketball and the momentum of Filipino pride, TM said the opportunity to be a part of Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3 × 3 was hard to pass up.
The association of the two groups begins with the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3 × 3 President’s Cup, which is tentatively scheduled to begin next month, where TM will be a sponsor. “TM is one with the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3 × 3 President’s Cup in championing the talents of our local players and bringing them to the international stage,” said Kristelle Dizon, Globe VP for Consumer Mobile Business, in a statement.
“We continue to look for ways to help rekindle fans’ passion for basketball games by supporting the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3 × 3 President’s Cup online. This will allow fans to see and support their favorite teams while staying insurance at home, “he added.
As a league, Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3 × 3 has been carving out a niche for itself in the local hoop scene, particularly in three-on-three basketball.
The first league of its kind, took root early last year with the aim of helping the country earn enough FIBA 3 × 3 points to reserve a spot in the qualifiers for the 2020 Olympics, where 3 × basketball 3 is earning its debut.
He achieved his immediate goal as the Chooks-to-Go-backed team earned a spot in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament to be held in May next year in Austria. The team hopes to dig deeper and make it to the rescheduled Tokyo Games in mid-2021.
Along the way, Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3 × 3 hosted a series of tournaments, something it intends to continue and develop now that it is a professional league.
For its first season as a professional league, 12 teams are ready to compete, namely: Uling Roasters-Butuan City, Bacolod-Masters Sardines, Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards, Palayan City Capitals, Zamboanga Peninsula Valientes MLV, Porac Big Boss Cement Green Gorillas, Bicol 3 × 3 Pro, Pasig Sta. Lucia Realtors, Saranggani Marlins, Pagadian City Rocky Sports Valientes and Petra Cement.
The 12th team is the Family’s Brand Sardines-Zamboanga City Chooks 3X3 team comprised of the best Philippine basketball players Joshua Munzon, Alvin Pasaol, Santi Santillan and Troy Rike, in the final. Their participation is geared towards preparing for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament next year.
Originally, the President’s Cup was intended to start on October 2 in a “semi-bubble” configuration at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna.
Beneath the semi-bubble, players and staff will shelter inside the tournament venue for four days during the first two stages of the competition.
Unfortunately, such a setup did not get the go-ahead from the Inter-Agency Working Group for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) in relation to existing protocols amid the conditions prevailing with the coronavirus pandemic.
Since then, the league has recalibrated its momentum and is instead making a full bubble, with each conference taking place for 15 days within Inspire.
He has written to the IATF again to be allowed to continue his season on time and is only waiting for a response. – Michael Angelo S. Murillo
