The psychotic nurse will see you now … for season 2 of Ratched. Netflix’s horror thriller will return to delve deeper into the wacky world of nurse Mildred Ratched (Sarah Paulson).
Season 2 of Ratched is definitely happening, as the Ryan Murphy-produced show began by receiving an order for two seasons from Netflix. The first season featured the younger version of the iconic character from the 1975 classic film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Season 2 will continue to tell the story until the timeline matches the movie.
Spoiler alert: The following story has spoilers for Ratched season 1.
The prequel series comes from co-creators Ryan Murphy and Evan Romansky and begins when Mildred lands a nursing job at Lucia State Hospital, a leading psychiatric institution, where new and disturbing experiments are performed on the human mind.
Mildred features a sleek, buttoned exterior that hides a growing darkness within. During season 1, it is revealed that Mildred is the adoptive sister of serial killer Edmund Tolleson (Finn Wittrock), who is being treated at the hospital.
Meanwhile, California Governor George Wilburn (Vincent D’Onofrio) funds the controversial experiments, hoping the project will help him get re-elected.
Here’s everything we know about Ratched season 2 so far.
Ratched season 2 release date
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for season 2 of Ratched.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it is unclear when filming will begin for season 2. Paulson told Variety he will “be back to work soon, not Ratched.” That project could be the new season of American Horror Story or even a new installment of American Crime Story.
Both shows are also Murphy’s creations, which means the blockbuster could be busy for quite some time.
“Nobody knows anything about season 2 because Ryan, with the amount of things that is happening,” said Paulson, “Who knows when, when is everything going to start, and if the pandemic is launched and then we think hard who knows?”
It seems likely that Season 2 of Ratched will not be filmed until spring or even summer 2021. If that’s the case, it will launch on Netflix possibly early 2022.
Ratchet cast
While the cast roster for Ratched season 2 is unconfirmed, it’s safe to say that Sarah Paulson will return as the main character, Nurse Mildred Ratched.
The other cast members expected to return for season 2 are:
- Finn Wittrock as Edmund Tolleson, a serial killer inmate at Lucia State Hospital and Mildred’s adoptive brother

There are several notable members of the Ratched cast who will not be returning for season 2, as their characters are dead. However, they may appear in a flashback, dream, or vision:
- Sharon Stone as Lenore Osgood, a wealthy heiress and mother of Henry

Ratched season 2 plot and spoilers
While very little is known about the exact details of Ratched’s season 2 plot, we can make some guesses based on the season 1 finale.
In the end, Edmund escaped from Lucia State Hospital with the help of fellow patient Charlotte and motel manager Louise. Meanwhile, Mildred moved to Mexico to start over with her love Gwendolyn (who was diagnosed with lung cancer).
Then after a two-year time jump, Edmund called Mildred. Believing that she had previously planned to kill him, he tells her that he has found his new hiding place and that he is going to kill her and Gwendolyn. Reply Mildred: Not if she kills him first.
The general idea of Ratched is to approach the time of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
“We are definitely doing a second season, but if we were to continue, the plan would be to do about four seasons,” Paulson explained to Elle.com. “And in the fourth season, we ended up in El Nido del Cuco was. But I don’t think we’ll ever meet in the hospital [from the movie]Unless it’s before McMurphy is admitted, unless it’s before all those patients are there. Unless you want to see computer-generated Danny DeVitos and Jack Nicholsons perform with me, which, I don’t know if that’s the way to do it. “
