Pope Francis on Monday appointed Archbishop Charles John Brown, currently Apostolic Nuncio to Albania, to head the Holy See’s diplomatic mission in the Philippines.

Pope Francis appointed a new apostolic nuncio to the Philippines on Monday. The Pope has transferred the American Archbishop Charles John Brown, currently Apostolic Nuncio to Albania, to head the diplomatic mission of the Holy See in the Philippines in Manila.

The position of apostolic nuncio to the Philippines has been vacant since November 16, 2019, when Pope Francis transferred Italian Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia to the United Nations in New York as head of the Holy See’s Permanent Observation mission.

Archbishop Charles John Brown was born on October 13, 1959, and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of New York on May 13, 1989. Before coming to Rome, he worked as an assistant pastor at St. Brendan Church in the Bronx.

In September 2009, he was appointed assistant secretary of the International Theological Commission, which helps the Holy See, mainly the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, to examine doctrinal questions of great importance.

On November 26, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Father Brown Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, elevating him to the dignity of Archbishop. Pope Benedict XVI ordained him bishop on Epiphany, January 6, 2012.
