Telecommunications service provider LISTED Philippine Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (PT&T) plans to assess the feasibility of its plan to offer 5G fixed wireless broadband services.
PT&T said in an emailed statement to reporters over the weekend that it would soon be “testing 5G fixed wireless broadband as a proof of concept.”
“This is in line with the company’s initiative to enter 5G broadband services in the near future,” he added.
The company noted that it had 23% year-on-year growth in revenues during the first six months of the year due to a 22% increase in its broadband connections.
James G. Velasquez, President and CEO of PT&T, said: “We now benefit from having spent the last two years transforming PT&T operations and product offerings to be relevant in the digital age.”
“This makes us even more resilient during these times as the requirement for high-speed internet and digital services becomes a priority,” he added.
The company said it had signed a partnership agreement with Go Philippines, a social enterprise, to “deliver critical broadband Internet solutions for academia, enhancing the user experience for quality education.”
PT&T said it currently has “a network reach of 13,500 kilometers of fiber in high growth areas and that it covers almost 40% of the total Philippine population.”
PT&T remains interested in its plan to provide mobile services in the country, as the penetration of smartphones continues to grow and the arrival of 5G technology gives the company the ability to improve various applications.
The company has been studying the latest concepts in the implementation of “visualization of network components in data centers.”
“This is expected to reduce the number of network elements deployed across the country and will substantially reduce the cost and implementation period,” PT&T said in a statement in June. – Arjay L. Balinbin
