Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 27) – More than 7 million families have experienced hunger at least once in the past three months, representing a new record of 30.7 percent, according to an independent pollster.

A Social Weather Stations survey conducted between September 17 and 20 and published on Sunday revealed that approximately 7.6 million families reported involuntary hunger or hunger due to lack of food at home, amid the COVID pandemic -19 in progress.

This surpassed the previous record of 23.8 percent in March 2012, SWS noted.

The incidence of hunger in September increased by 9.8 points from the level of 20.9 percent (or approximately 5.2 million families) recorded in July.

The increase, according to SWS, was due to an increase in scores in all areas of the survey, with new record hunger rates in Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao.

In the capital region, 28.2 percent, or an estimated 941,000 families, reported having been hungry in the past three months, up from 16.3 percent in July.

Overall hunger also rose to new record highs in Visayas and Mindanao, which recorded an incidence of hunger of 40.7 percent and 37.5 percent, respectively.

The national survey was conducted through computer-assisted telephone and mobile phone interviews. It included a sample of 1,249 adults.

The survey had a margin of error of ± 3 percent, ± 6 percent for Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao, and ± 5 percent for Balance Luzon.
