MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) are scheduled to provide a one-time assistance of P30,000 to college-level children of Filipino Overseas Workers (OFW) affected by the COVID 19 pandemic.

The program, dubbed “Tabang OFW,” will benefit 30,000 qualified university students of repatriated, displaced and deceased Filipino workers abroad (OFW), according to DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III.
Under the agreement, the DOLE will issue “orders, circulars or guidelines that will detail the effective and efficient implementation of the program, including the proper use of funds, adherence to customary government accounting and auditing rules, and reporting.”
CHED, meanwhile, will be the one to deliver the P1 billion fund to the DOLE for the implementation of the educational assistance program.
As for CHED’s Unified Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST), it will assist the DOLE in the promotion and other information dissemination activities of the program, as well as work jointly in the development of guidelines, coverage and criteria. to take advantage of the subsidy under the program.
“We hope this will be of great help in helping our OFWs and their children through these challenging times. By doing this, we also hope to be able to partially reward our heroes today, ”said Bello.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) previously said 220,000 repatriated OFWs have been sent back to their places of origin.
