Supreme Court Evaluates Online Bar Exams for 2021

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 24) – The Supreme Court is considering conducting the Bar Association exams online next year, Supreme Court Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta said Thursday.

“We’re thinking about that … Probably next year,” Peralta said during the Senate judiciary budget hearing. “Not this year. Wala na this year. ”

Peralta was responding to Senator Francis Tolentino, who asked if the high court has plans to administer exams online, similar to what is being done in some parts of the United States, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now there is a movement because we are not the only ones facing this crisis, it moves in other jurisdictions, in Michigan, the District of Columbia, Louisiana and also in New York to have bar exams online,” said Tolentino.

What is certain now is that the Supreme Court has decided to conduct the exams in three different places simultaneously, Peralta said. The bar exam is usually held at a university in Metro Manila.

“We have already decided to conduct bar exams simultaneously in Mindanao and Visayas as well,” Peralta said.

Associate Judge Marvic Leonen, president of next year’s bar, said his team has been looking into the possibility of taking “online but proctored bar exams” or a combination of written and online exams. Pilot tests will take place in the coming months, he added.

The Supreme Court previously announced the postponement of the professional licensure exam for lawyers this year, rescheduling for November 2021, as the country grapples with rising coronavirus infections.
