MANILA – Globe Telecom announced its “biggest network upgrade” on Thursday after the government called for better Internet service, especially during the pandemic.
The plan includes accelerating the construction of cell sites, expanding coverage and increasing data capacity, Globe Telecom said in a statement. The update was established 10 years after it launched its nationwide transformation program, it said.
Globe said it would upgrade all of its sites to have 4G / LTE using many different frequencies that are critical for coverage and speeds. The nationwide 4G rollout means the entire country will be “data ready,” he said.
Fiber to homes will also be accelerated to improve wired connections, the Ayala-led telco said. All of these updates are expected to be completed in 2021, Globe said.
“Globe is now in a much better position to meet the demands of its customers. By heeding the government’s call, we will strive to provide our customers with better network performance and quality of service. We look to the future where our country has a strong digital economy backed by robust and reliable connectivity, “said Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu.
This year, Globe said it allocated P50.3 billion in capital expenditures, most of which would be spent on network upgrades.
Rival PLDT Inc also revealed its growing telecom site builds, while third player DITO Telecommunity is revamping its network for the launch scheduled for March 2021.
President Rodrigo Duterte, in his fifth state of the nation address, urged telecommunications companies to improve service by December or face closure and asset seizures.
