Robredo to Duterte: don’t wait for the vaccine in the battle against the coronavirus

MANILA – Vice President Robredo said Monday night that President Rodrigo Duterte’s plan to wait for a coronavirus vaccine in response to the pandemic “is not enough” for the Philippines to address the health crisis.

Duterte previously expressed his frustration in a public briefing, saying he did not know what the opposition and its critics still want from the government, as the Philippines has hospitals, hospital beds and morgues to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak in the country. .

“Ang sabi, we are not doing enough. What can we do with the germ that is flying? It is the microbe that cannot be controlled by anyone,” he said.

“What are you doing? Do you want to spray from the sky? DDT? We can’t do anything there,” Duterte said, referring to the banned insecticide.

The president reiterated that only a vaccine can finally solve the health crisis. However, Robredo said in a Facebook post that waiting will not solve the country’s situation.

“I don’t think it’s enough as long as there are hospitals, beds and funerals, all you have to do is wait for the vaccine,” he said.

The vice president said the Philippines can suppress the COVID-19 pandemic by “medical and non-medical” means. The Philippine government has been criticized for appointing retired military generals to spearhead anti-coronavirus policies.

Robredo also said that the government needs to “overcome humanitarian emergencies” such as poverty, hunger and unemployment caused by the pandemic.

He also advised the restructuring of public and private finances and rebuilding the economy in an “inclusive, resilient and sustainable” way.

“Number 1 is not a solution for spraying pesticides in Manila from airplanes,” Robredo said.

Coronavirus cases in the Philippines have been steadily increasing since the beginning of March, and in recent weeks the Department of Health has been recording thousands of infections daily.

As of Monday, a total of 290,190 cases have been registered in the country.
