The 2020 Emmy ceremony was historic for many reasons. There was the fact that it took place during a pandemic, which meant that the stars tuned in from their homes. Schitt’s cove swept the comedy categories. And more black actors took home awards than ever.
Seven Emmys went to black artists this year, beating the previous record of six from two years ago, by The Hollywood Reporter. Those seven winners include:
Best Leading Actress in a Limited Series: Regina King, Watchmen
Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series: Zendaya, Euphoria
Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series: Uzo Aduba, Lady america
Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series: Maya Rudolph, SNL
Excellent voice-over performance of characters: Maya Rudolph, Big Mouth
Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series: Ron Cephas Jones, We are
Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series: Eddie Murphy, SNL
With her Watchmen Winning, King is now tied with Alfre Woodward for the most Emmy Awards won by a black actor. During the ceremony, both King and Aduba raised awareness of Breonna Taylor’s death by wearing T-shirts with her face.
“I love being a black woman, I loved being a black girl,” King told reporters, according to THR. “I love being American, and it’s important for people to see all of those things together. And when you have the platform, celebrate that and remind them of the ones who tend to look beyond black girls, black women. When I saw my sister Uzo in this same shirt, it was just a confirmation that this was correct. “
Zendaya’s victory made history: she is the youngest woman to win the award for Best Leading Actress in a drama series. She also took advantage of her great moment to make a statement saying: “There is hope in young people.”
