The quirky feel-good show Schitt’s Creek, the alternate reality drama Watchmen and the HBO family saga Succession were the big Emmy winners on Sunday in a live show where the coronavirus pandemic meant that most celebrities participated from their homes and backyards.

With two Creative Arts Emmys already in the bag last week, Schitt’s Creek set a new record for most wins in a single season for a comedy series, winning seven Emmys in a row. Succession and Watchmen, both from HBO, won four awards each.

Schitt’s Creek, a hit on the small Pop television network about a wealthy family forced to live in a dilapidated motel, won the award for best comedy series, while Canadian stars Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy were they took the leading comedy acting awards.

Host Jimmy Kimmel opened the Emmys from an empty Los Angeles theater filled with cardboard cutouts of the nominees, ushering in Hollywood’s first major Covid-era awards show. “Hello and welcome to the Pand-Emmys,” Kimmel said, as the producers cut out archival footage of a star-studded audience, before revealing the empty seats at the venue.
