Bryson DeChambeau’s family may not have been able to join him in Mamaroneck, New York, for the 2020 US Open, but there was no way they were missing the opportunity to celebrate their victory with him.
Even if DeChambeau wasn’t expecting it.
As the 27-year-old walked through the clubhouse grounds at Winged Foot Golf Club, he was surprised to wander past a screen that had his parents broadcasting live on a video call. The thrill of surprise washed over DeChambeau as he looked at his encouraging parents and immediately tried to avoid crying.
“Hi Mom and Dad,” said a broken DeChambeau. “I did it!”
There were no fans present at the tournament due to the coronavirus pandemic, meaning that DeChambeau had to celebrate his first major tournament win on his own.
Given the way DeChambeau played this week, it won’t be the last time he enjoys a big win.
