MANILA (TO UPDATE) – Manila’s police chief fired a station commander on Sunday for allegedly failing to prevent violations of COVID-19 security protocols by people visiting the “white sand beach” area of Manila Bay.

In a text message, Manila Police District Director Rolando Miranda said he issued an administrative relief against Ermita Police Station Commander Ariel Caramoan after authorities allegedly failed to implement the protocols of security at the controversial baywalk.

The Ermita Police Station has jurisdiction over the Manila Bay area.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) COVID Shield, meanwhile, praised Caramoan’s immediate relief.

In a statement, the JTF COVID Shield said that Caramoan should have taken the initiative to plan and implement strict security and protection measures in Manila Bay.

“Caramoan could have prevented violations of the quarantine protocol in Manila Bay if there had been prior planning and regular monitoring of the situation in the area,” said the JTF COVID Shield.

“Clearly, it also did not comply with the JTF COVID Shield order that was coordinated with the Chief of the PNP (Philippine National Police) for all police commanders to immediately monitor and take action on violations of quarantine protocols that are being going viral on social media. “

Caramoan will be replaced by Police Lt. Col. Alex Daniel, according to JTF COVID Shield.

Hundreds of people flocked to Manila Bay on Sunday morning to catch a glimpse of the artificial white sand, made from crushed dolomite rocks, dumped into the area as part of the beach nutrition project.
