MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has extended the state of calamity in the country for a year amid the new coronavirus pandemic.
Malacañang published Proclamation No. 1021 on Friday, which extends the state of calamity declared throughout the country for a period of one year, from September 13, 2020 to September 12, 202, “unless it is lifted or extended earlier according to circumstances justify it. ” The broadcast was dated September 16.
Duterte noted that even with “significant progress” in the response to the pandemic, “the number of positive cases and deaths from COVID-19 continues to increase despite efforts and interventions to contain it.”
The extension of the state of calamity was recommended by the National Council for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction.
“This extension will, among other things, give the national government and local government units (LGUs) broad freedom to continue to use appropriate funds, including the rapid response fund, in their disaster preparedness and response efforts to contain the disaster. spread of COVID -19, monitor and control the prices of basic necessities and first-class products, and provide basic services to affected populations, ”said the President.
Government agencies and LGUs were ordered to continue to provide full assistance and cooperation with each other, and to mobilize the necessary resources to carry out critical, urgent and appropriate disaster response measures and assistance in a timely manner to reduce and eliminate the threat of COVID -19. “
The president also ordered all law enforcement agencies to guarantee peace and order in the affected areas.
The proclamation was issued when COVID-19 cases in the country reached 279,526 on Friday, of which 65,906 are active cases, 208,790 are recoveries and 4,830 are deaths.
Duterte first placed the country in a state of public health emergency on March 8, during the early days of the pandemic.
On March 16, Duterte escalated this to a six-month state of calamity due to the health crisis and placed all of Luzon under a strict two-month lockdown to curb transmission. Since then, the blockages have eased.
