Fiba will use bubble settings for qualifying tournaments

MANILA, Philippines – Fiba will adopt a “bubble-like” environment for the next two windows of the Continental Cup qualifiers, including the Asian Cup, of which the Philippines is a part.

The basketball governing body decided that the confined environment is the best way to resume competition amid the COVID-19 pandemic for the windows set for November 2020 and February 2021.

The decision was taken into consideration “for the health and safety of the players, coaches and officials, and following a recommendation from the Medical Commission and the Competitions Commission, the Executive Committee”.

Fiba’s qualifying games were generally held in a round-trip format. This time, the games will be played within a confined environment in which each “bubble” will house four or eight teams, or one or two qualifying groups.

PCR testing will be required for all persons staying within the controlled environment within the host city.

The host cities will be decided regionally and announced in due course, Fiba said.

Gilas Pilipinas is in Group A with South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand and is 1-0 in the competition after a 100-70 win over Indonesia on February 23.

The Philippines were originally scheduled to play South Korea on the road on November 27 and then Thailand three days later before hosting Indonesia on February 18 and South Korea on February 21 in 2021.

Gilas has yet to meet again since the last window due to lockdown protocols in place in the Philippines.
