MANILA, Philippines – Metro Rail Transit (MRT) 3 announced that, for the first time in its 20-year history, it was able to deploy 21 trains on Wednesday.

In a statement Thursday, MRT-3 said the 21 sets of deployed trains are a record.

With the 21 trains deployed, it allows the MRT-3 to “shorten the waiting time interval between trains and allows the railway line to increase its passenger capacity.”

MRT-3 deployed 20 trains last Monday, September 14.

On average, the number of trains deployed on the main MRT-3 line is 15.

The MRT-3 line, which began operating in December 1999, is undergoing massive rehabilitation works by the Japanese companies Sumitomo Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).

Rehabilitation works are due to finish next year.

Department of Transportation (DOTr) Under Secretary for Railways Timothy John Batan previously said the goal of the rehabilitation project is to restore the busy MRT-3 to its original capacity.

The MRT-3, which runs the length of Edsa, serves 300,000 passengers per day. By the time the rehabilitation works are finished, Batan said the MRT-3 can serve up to 600,000 travelers.

“This is a product of the DOTr and MRT-3 collaboration to improve rail line service for the traveling public,” said MRT-3 Director of Operations Michael Capati.

“We want to maintain our commitment to provide our passengers with the best service they can experience. As a secretary [Arthur] Tugade always says, we owe it to our passengers, ”he added.
