The tough competition for the position of University of Sto. Tomas (UST) head coach got tougher when 1996 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) top import Sean Chambers entered the area.
Chambers said The Manila Times Monday via an online message that he applied for the vacant position when former head coach Aldin Ayo retired.
“I have always been a huge fan of UAAP (University Athletic Association of the Philippines). And I have always been waiting for the right opportunity to return to the Philippines in [a] coaching position, ”he said.
The 55-year-old won six PBA crowns for the Alaska Aces. It was former Alaska head coach Tim Cone’s main weapon in capturing the 1996 grand slam, winning the All-Filipino, Commissioner’s Cup and Governors’ Cup titles.
“What a wonderful opportunity to take over the program that was once led by one of my best coach-mentors of all time, Aric. [del Rosario]. I have the opportunity to bring back the glory days when he led the team to four championships that I was able to witness, ”Chambers enthused.
In addition to Chambers, also on the lineup of aspiring coaching are college alumni Siot Tanquingcen, Chris Cantonjos, Estong Ballesteros, Ed Cordero, Gilbert Lao and Potit de Vera, as well as former Blackwater head coach Aris Dimaunahan. Former Columbian Dyip head coach and current Rain or Shine assistant coach Chris Gavina, a UST undergraduate, also applied for the position.
Ayo vacated the position when UST implicated him in the allegedly unauthorized training facility, dubbed the “Sorsogon bubble.”
