Former PBA importer Sean Chambers confirmed Monday that he has applied for the position of head trainer for UST Growling Tigers.
Chambers, who was the Lecheros’ backup from 1989 to 2001, explained that the legacy of the late Aric del Rosario, former UST mentor and senior assistant to Tim Cone, made their decision much easier.
Del Rosario led UST teams stacked to four consecutive men’s basketball crowns from 1993 to 1996, producing the likes of Bal David, Gerard Francisco, Chris Cantonjos and the like.
Chambers admired Del Rosario and treated him like his father.
“You have to go back to what they used to be, a group of young people who support the university and play for the university in all the battles, and you just have to reach out to the alumni to come back and support the program as it was in the decade of 1990 when I was with Coach Aric, “Chambers said on The Athlete’s Tribune podcast.
“When I was with Alaska, I was a frequent visitor to UST with games and practices and I learned a lot about Filipino culture. Once you have the right guys there, you can empower them, start with discipline and education they have to be there. the vanguard for these players, “he added.
Chambers, who is the current Dean of Students at Fern Bacon Middle School in Sacramento, California, explained that now is the right time to look for a coaching job in the Philippines.
“In 2012, I had the opportunity to become one of the PBA coaching advisers. But my children were extremely young. My daughter is now 17 years old and on her way to college. Now it’s easier. My son is going to be in their second year in high school … They are almost young adults, now there will be an opportunity to really hold a position in the Philippines. “
