(CNN) – Pau Gasol and his wife Catherine named their newborn baby in honor of the daughter of former Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant.
Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, on January 26, a tragedy that left millions of people around the world in mourning.
Gasol won two NBA championships with Bryant in 2009 and 2010 and the pair stayed close until Bryant’s death.
In a message posted on Twitter on Sunday, Gasol announced the birth of his daughter.
“At last our little girl has arrived! The delivery went very well and we couldn’t be happier! Elisabet Gianna Gasol, a very meaningful name for our super beautiful daughter!” he said.
Gasol’s wife Catherine wrote on Instagram: “Elisabet Gianna Gasol joined our family on September 10, 2020. She made a quick and easy entry on a VERY special day, her great-grandmother Elizabeth’s 100th birthday and her second his mom and dad’s engagement anniversary. We are already so in love with our sweet Ellie !! “
Vanessa Bryant, Kobe Bryant’s wife commented below: “I love you 3 !!! Congratulations! Xo!”
Both Catherine and Pau Gasol included the hashtag #GirlDad in their posts.
The hashtag became a way for parents around the world to pay tribute to Bryant after his death by celebrating their relationship with their daughters.
Bryant was the father of four girls, and the trend started after ESPN’s Elle Duncan shared a moving story after her death about how proud Bryant was to be the father of her daughters.
Last month, Gasol acknowledged that it would have been Bryant’s birthday on August 23.
“With tears in my eyes today … I wish you were here celebrating your birthday with your daughters and your family. I miss you and Gigi so much brother. I will always be grateful for how much you have impacted my life. In so many ways. different, “he wrote on Twitter.
