San Beda has just secured the commitment of two bodyguards who will help James Canlas over the next three years.
Durham Crossover’s Brendon Ocampo and ex-NU Bulldog JV Gallego completed their papers and signed up at San Beda over the weekend.
The development was confirmed by team manager Jude Roque and Durham head coach Mike Cruz.
First of all, Ocampo is a product of the show that Canlas produced. He is a 6-foot-1 combined guard and is only 18 years old, making him eligible for the 96th NCAA season.
“Brendon is the best here in his age group, a very versatile player who can cut and shoot. He plays with a lot of heart and has always been a brave player ”. Cruz said about Ocampo, who averaged 15.5 points and 6.3 rebounds during the 2019 Chooks-to-Go NBTC National Finals.
“Brendon is a promising combined point guard who can turn out to be like Robert Bolick,”Roque added.
Ocampo will be in good company as he will be with Canlas, a member of the NCAA Season 95 Mythical Team, who is admired by the Filipino-Canadian community.
“We placed him in San Beda to be James Canlas’s mentor,Cruz said.
“I hope James can be a good role model for Brendon. They have a similar background, being half Pinoys in Toronto,”Roque shared.
“They had similar struggles early in their development years. I think it’s also good for James to start leading his younger teammates. “
On the other hand, Gallego is a proven scorer who averaged 7.2 points on 40 percent from deep shots, 2.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists in the 82 season.
The 5-foot-11-inch, 22-year-old will be out of the 96 season and will remain eligible for two years.
“JV is a proven scorer and an experienced player. Can help our young team in difficult matches”Roque said.
Both players are looking to fill in the shoes left by Evan Nelle, who moved to La Salle earlier this year.
