CARDINAL Luis Antonio Tagle, prefect of the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, tested positive for coronavirus upon arrival in Manila on Thursday, according to CBCP News, the website of the Philippine Conference of Catholic Bishops.
This was confirmed by the Holy See Press Office in a report published by Vatican News on Friday evening, the Philippine bishops’ news site said.
The Vatican said Cardinal Tagle, who is also the president of Caritas Internationalis, is asymptomatic and is now in quarantine.
A contact tracing is underway to determine who Tagle may have been in contact with in recent days.
Although he has a residence in the Congregation, the former Archbishop of Manila has stayed at the Pontifical Collegio Filippino since he arrived in Rome in February for his new assignment.
Earlier this week, Tagle went to the Italian city of Turin to attend the episcopal ordination of the new Apostolic Nuncio to Mongolia, Fr. Giorgio Marengo, told CBCPNews.
Tagle underwent a Covid-19 smear test in Rome on September 7, and this came back negative, the Vatican said.
On September 8, the Blessed Virgin Mary’s birthday, he led an online retreat for Philippine Covid-19 leaders organized by Caritas Philippines and the Cebu-based Dilaab Foundation.
