Another distinguished Santo Tomas University alumnus has launched into the search for the next job as head trainer for UST Growling Tigers.
Edgardo “Ed” Cordero, who is best remembered for his 54-point outburst with the then Glowing Goldies on July 29, 1979, will try to make UST proud, this time off the bench.
“I sent an email of intent to Fr. [Ermito] of Sagon through the [Institute of Physical Education and Athletics]”Cordero told ESPN5 in a message.
“I’m not sure if nakarate na kay father,” he added, confirming his intentions to succeed former coach Aldin Ayo, who resigned last week following the fallout from Sorsogon’s controversial bubble.
Following his college stint at UST, the 6’4 Cordero played for Toyota, Beer Hausen / Manila Beer, Tanduay, Shell, and Alaska, before retiring at the end of the 1990 PBA season.
He played a total of 223 games in his eight-season career, averaging 6.5 points. His 54-point outburst remains the best scoring mark in UAAP history.
Cordero, 60, is just one of many UST alumni named to take the reins of a powerful program that is currently beset by controversy.
Aside from Cordero, several former players from the 1990s dynasty teams are reportedly candidates for the job.
Among those said to be vying for the position are Siot Tanquincen, Estong Ballesteros and Chris Cantonjos, according to the Manila Bulletin.
Other potential candidates include Patrick Fran, Gilbert Lao and former Tigres mentor Pido Jarencio.
Cordero admitted that he is “a long shot” for the position and that he cannot claim any advantage over the other candidates.
“I don’t think I can claim an advantage over any of them. It really is a matter best left in the school’s evaluation,” Cordero explained.
Prior to his stint with the Altas, he was Frankie Lim’s assistant with the San Beda Red Lions. Cordero also served as Atoy Co’s assistant with the Mapua Cardinals.
