Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 10) – The Philippine coronavirus case count rose to 248,947 on Thursday as the death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 4,000, the Department of Health said.

The latest DOH report showed 3,821 new infections, of which 54 percent or 2,079 were in Metro Manila.

The department’s Thursday newsletter also listed other areas with the most new patients such as Rizal with 286, Cavite with 174, Laguna with 168 and Bulacan with 142.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths from COVID-19 rose to 4,066. This came after health officials confirmed another 80 deaths, 23 of which died in September, 33 in August and 24 from May to July.

The DOH also marked a new batch of 563 patients as recovered, and the number of survivors reached 186,058. This means that 73 percent of those infected in the country have already recovered.

The latest COVID-19 figures bring the country’s active cases or currently ill patients to 58,823.

DOH added that it removed 17 duplicates from its total count as part of its cleanup process. He also said that 35 cases previously reported as recoveries turned out to be deaths, while another turned out to be an active case after final validation.

According to the secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Fortunato dela Peña, the national government has already allocated 89 million dollars for the participation of the Philippines in the Solidarity trials of the World Health Organization, which aim to find a treatment for the COVID-19.

Given that clinical trials can begin in October or November of this year, Dela Peña said that results can be expected during the second quarter of 2021.
