DAYS after her brother’s death, Melodia Parojinog-Malingin also died of health complications while in police custody, the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), General Camilo Cascolan, said on Monday.
Former Ozamis city councilor Ricardo Parojinog, Melodia’s brother, died on September 4 while he was also in police custody. He succumbed to cardiopulmonary arrest secondary to cardiovascular disease based on initial findings.
Like him, Melodia was also accused of violating the Laws of the Republic 9165 and 10591.
He died in medical conditions similar to his brother’s at the Hilarion A. Ramiro Sr. Medical Center in the city of Ozamis on Sunday morning, Cascolan said.
According to the PNP chief, Ozamis City police investigators said Melodia’s death was caused by cardiogenic shock secondary to intractable cardiac arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation to ventricular tachycardia secondary to massive gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to a uremic gastropathy, based on the findings of treating physicians.
Melodia had been detained while awaiting trial for her drug case along with her husband Gaudencio.
On December 6, 2017, the couple were arrested when police found eight kilograms of shabu (crystal methamphetamine) in their possession during a search of their home.
Ricardo’s remains were released to his family after forensic examiners from the PNP examined them.
According to Colonel Danildo Tumanda, provincial director of Misamis Occidental, Ricardo’s family did not request an autopsy on his body, “knowing perfectly the state of health of the deceased.”
Cascolan assured that the deaths of Ricardo and Melodia will continue to be investigated.
“Anyway, Misamis Occidental PPO (Provincial Police Office) will proceed with its investigation,” he said at a press conference.
