MANILA – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) will lead the way in establishing the return of college sports teams to practice amid the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic
In an online press conference on Monday, CHED President Prospero de Vera said a technical working group (TWG) will be established together with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Department of Health to develop the training guidelines, which will be based primarily on the joint administrative order for professional sports practices.
“The decision to install the TWG is the result of a meeting we had last week with the PSC, GAB (Board of Games and Amusements) and the Department of Health last week and my meeting this morning with Dean Kiko Díaz from UP (University of the Philippines) Faculty of Human Kinetics and trainer Eric Altamirano, “said De Vera.
De Vera said the guidelines will be rolled out first to “a smaller group,” probably major college leagues like the Philippine College Athletic Association (UAAP), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Cebu Inc Schools Athletic Federation. .and will eventually expand to the other college leagues.
In a statement later Monday, the UAAP revealed that it will have three representatives on the TWG, namely Diaz, who also leads the league’s sports and rules committee, executive director Rebo Saguisag and the athletic director of Far Eastern University. , Mark Molina, who is also part of the aforementioned committee.
On the other hand, the NCAA will have Paul Supan from José Rizal University and Herc Callanta from Lyceum as its representatives before the TWG.
CHED Executive Director Cindy Jaro will lead the TWG.
De Vera said that the guidelines will be published “once the TWG is organized.” “We will aim for a work schedule of about two weeks and maybe a maximum of three weeks.”
“You have to be a little patient with the schedule because there are two major challenges that we have to face. Number one is that there are a lot of leagues across the country, so we have to cascade and engage them, and number two, there are different sports that they play in all leagues, “he added.
Allowing the resumption of university team practices came amid continuous investigations into the alleged bubbles raised by the men’s basketball teams from the University of Santo Tomás (UST) and the women’s volleyball teams from the National University (NU).
According to De Vera, orders to show cause will be sent to UST and NU to explain why they should avoid the sanctions.
Malacañang said on Monday that the Interagency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) enabled preparatory training for student athletes in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) and modified GCQ (MGCQ).
“Student-athletes of university athletic associations, as defined in the Law of the Republic No. 10676 or the Law for the Protection of Students-Athletes, may resume their preparatory training in areas under General Community Quarantine and Modified General Community Quarantine, subject to the guidelines that may be issued by the Higher Education Commission (CHED) ”, IATF resolution no. 68 read.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque also confirmed this in a virtual press.
“Those amateurs of UAAP, magpa-practice is now teams (for UAAP fans, our teams will now start their practice), ”he said. (PNA)
