MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte granted “absolute pardon” to US Navy Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton, who was convicted of the death of Filipino transgender woman Jennifer Laude, said Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr.
“Cutting things off on what constitutes time served, and given that the place where he was detained was not under the prisoner’s control, and to do justice, the President has granted Pemberton an absolute pardon. Here at the Palace, ”Locsin said in a tweet on Monday.

Pemberton was convicted of killing a transgender woman Jennifer Laude in 2014, but the Olongapo Regional Court of First Instance (RTC) recently published an order allowing the release of the American soldier.
According to the Olongapo court order, Pemberton was said to have already served the maximum 10-year term of his sentence after taking into account the good conduct time allowances he accumulated while in detention.
But Malacañang previously said that Pemberton’s release remains on hold after the Department of Justice advised the Bureau of Corrections not to fire the US soldier pending court resolution of a motion for reconsideration filed before him.
Pemberton is currently being held in a restricted facility at Camp Aguinaldo, pursuant to the Visiting Forces Agreement. [ac]
