The DFA said the travel restrictions were due to “serious concerns by the Malaysian government over the recent increase in the number of confirmed and imported COVID-19 cases detected at Malaysia’s international points of entry among departing travelers.” from the Philippines, India and Indonesia.

The restrictions affect students, expatriates, professional visit pass holders, permanent resident pass holders, Malaysia My Second Home pass holders and spouse visa holders, including their children.

Meanwhile, diplomats and their dependents can go to Malaysia as long as they obtain approval from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Department before their trip, the agency noted.

The Philippines has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia, with 237,365. Indonesia follows with 194,109 infections.

India’s coronavirus infections have exceeded 4 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 tracker.

To date, Malaysia has 9,397 cases of COVID-19, data from the same tracker showed.
