MANILA, Philippines – Foreign Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin has joined critics in opposing the Motion Picture and Television Review Board (MTRCB) proposal to censor shows on Netflix and other streaming services. online video.

The country’s top diplomat said the move was “shameful” as Netflix has been one of the current “stay-at-home” activities of most people during the coronavirus disease pandemic.

“Enough with the idiotic regulation. If it’s on Netflix, everyone is watching the show and is tuned in to general sponsorship. Enough of showing ignorance. It’s embarrassing, ”Locsin wrote in a tweet.

On Thursday, the head of MTRCB’s legal affairs division, Jonathan Presquito, said during a Senate hearing that the agency has to regulate the content of online streaming sites.

The mandate of MTRCB is “to regulate and classify films, television programs and publicity materials”. This also includes the removal, approval, or disapproval of objectionable content from the film and television industry.

Lawmakers, including Senator Franklin Drilon, criticized the move, saying the MTRCB did not budge from its martial law origins, as it was created during the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
