Aldin Ayo has tendered his resignation as head coach of the UST Growling Tigers, he said in a statement Friday night.
In the statement, he admitted his wrongdoing in organizing the controversial bubble in Capuy, Sorsogon, which has opened a government investigation.
“I have resigned as the head coach of the UST men’s basketball team. I deeply apologize to all those who have been adversely affected by our activity and unnecessarily exposed to many convictions, especially the University,” Ayo said.
He also admitted that he is responsible for his actions and will walk away to reflect.
“I take responsibility for my actions and will face appropriate sanctions. And I will go on a personal retreat. I thank the UST community for their faith and continued support of the team. I ask for prayers that they, as well as I, may perhaps recover from these. difficult times, “he concluded.
The case was investigated by the University’s investigative body and the findings were presented to the school administration and various government agencies.
On Thursday night, the UAAP Board of Directors finalized its recommendations on the case after a four-hour meeting and will present them to the Board of Trustees, the league’s highest decision-making body.
Since the alleged bubble was discovered, numerous players have left the team, such as former team captain CJ Cansino, flying Rhenz Abando, Brent Paraíso, Ira Bataller and Jun Asunción.
Ayo lasted two seasons with UST. He amassed a 16-17 record, including an unlikely trip to the 82nd season UAAP men’s basketball finals as a fourth seeded, but the Tigers failed to defeat the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
Before that, he led the DLSU Green Goalkeepers to the UAAP 79th season championship behind the stellar performance of MVP Ben Mbala and Finals MVP Jeron Teng. He and La Salle fell short in the rematch against Ateneo in season 80.
In the NCAA, Ayo clinched the NCAA season 92 men’s basketball championship, leading Colegio de San Juan de Letran to a spectacular Game 3 victory against the dynastic San Beda.
