MANILA – United Coconut Planters Bank (UCBP) account holders’ funds remain safe despite the cyber heist last June that cost the government-controlled bank around PHP167 million.
In a Viber message to journalists on Thursday, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin Diokno said he is in close coordination with officials from the UCPB and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to go after the perpetrators of the cyber crime.
He said the UCPB is taking the necessary corrective measures to increase cyber security.
“The results of the initial investigation also indicate that UCPB account holders did not suffer financial loss or damage in this particular incident,” he said.
Diokno said the authorities “remain steadfast in fully resolving the matter while we work closely with the bank and the relevant law enforcement agency.”
“Rest assured that, in pursuit of our cybersecurity agenda, we continue to collaborate and involve the Financial Institutions Supervised by BSP to guarantee the security and integrity of the financial system, as well as the protection of financial consumers,” he added.
The cyber theft occurred over the long weekend in line with the commemoration of the country’s Independence Day on June 12. (PNA)
