MANILA – The Philippines innovation ranking climbed 4 places, reaching 50th place out of 131 participating economies in this year’s Global Innovation Index (GII), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said on Wednesday.
“The country’s latest performance in the GII is a testament to its continued commitment to innovation since 2014, when it ranked 100th. The Philippines rose 50 points in just 6 years,” DOST said in a statement.
The GII was developed by Cornell University, INSEAD Graduate Business School, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. It uses two subscripts: innovation input and innovation output.
From 86th place in 2018 in innovation contributions, the Philippines climbed to 76th in 2019 and 70th this year.
“This can be attributed to the increasing government investment in Research and Development (R&D),” said DOST.
The country also improved its innovation output from a 68th in 2018 to 42nd in 2019 and 41st in 2020.
DOST said that this is due to the improvement of human resources and the establishment of innovation facilities such as research centers and advanced laboratories.
Under the 29 lower-middle-income countries of the GII, the Philippines ranked fourth. It also ranked 11th out of 17 economies in Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Oceania.
